ASTM B117-25: What’s New

With the recent release of ASTM B117-25, here’s what’s new:
1) Table 3 Was Removed
Table 3 (temperature vs. density) was removed entirely, along with all references to it.
The removal of Table 3 makes it clear that users are responsible for measuring correctly and determining specification compliance; not Table 3.
2) Note 12 Was Updated
With Table 3 removed, Note 12 was updated to:
- reference the use of composite samples when necessary for measurement, and
- reinforce the fact that it is the user’s responsibility to ensure appropriate temperature correction and calibration offsets are applied, as necessary.
Accurate specific gravity measurement depends on the user understanding their instruments, how those instruments are calibrated, and how temperature affects the measurement. Users are expected to apply corrections in accordance with manufacturer guidance.
3) Appendix X1.4 Was Updated
The sentence that could be interpreted to imply that chambers operated in accordance with ASTM B117 would have a relative humidity of 95–98% was removed.
ASTM B117 does not specify a 95–98% relative humidity requirement, and this change makes that clear.
Auto Technology Company is proud to actively participate in ASTM standards development. We work closely with the committees and with the labs and manufacturers who rely on these practices every day, and we’re always happy to discuss how changes like these affect real-world testing and interpretation.
