Four Neutral Salt Spray Standards
One chamber configuration supports the closely related neutral exposures while preserving the operating limits of each standard.
Conditioned Fog Generation
A venturi atomizer, heated bubble tower, and baffled dispersion tower produce the continuous, freely settling fog required for neutral salt spray testing.
Integrated C Series Design
The molded fiberglass chamber, 6-inch touchscreen, and integrated 60-gallon solution reservoir form a self-contained laboratory system.

Neutral Salt Spray Standards Supported by the C Series
These standards all expose specimens to continuous neutral salt fog at 35°C. They are similar enough to run in the same chamber, but they are not interchangeable reporting designations. The selected method determines the allowable salt concentration, pH measurement condition, collection-rate averaging period, specimen position, test duration, and chamber-verification procedure.
| Standard | Neutral exposure | Primary application |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 9227 NSS | Neutral salt spray using the ISO NSS conditions | Metallic materials and metallic, conversion, anodic oxide, organic, or temporary protective coatings |
| JIS Z 2371 NSS | Neutral salt spray closely aligned with ISO 9227 NSS | Japanese material, coating, component, and product specifications |
| IEC 60068-2-11 Test Ka | Continuous neutral salt mist | Electrotechnical components, equipment, materials, and finishes |
| ISO 7253 | Continuous neutral salt spray applied to coated test panels | Paints, varnishes, and related organic coating systems |
The governing specification still controls the test: These salt-spray standards establish the exposure environment. The product, material, customer, or qualification specification normally establishes the duration, specimen preparation, evaluation method, and acceptance criteria.
Neutral Salt Spray Exposure Profiles
The C Series maintains the common 35°C neutral salt-fog environment while the method-specific setpoints and operating checks are applied to the selected profile.
| Profile | Chamber | Salt concentration | Collected pH | Fog collection per 80 cm² |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 9227 NSS | 35°C ±2°C | 50 g/L ±5 g/L | 6.5–7.2 at 25°C ±2°C | 1.5 mL/h ±0.5 mL/h, averaged over at least 24 h |
| JIS Z 2371 NSS | 35°C ±2°C | 50 g/L ±5 g/L | 6.5–7.2 at 25°C ±2°C | 1.5 mL/h ±0.5 mL/h, averaged over at least 24 h |
| IEC 60068-2-11 Test Ka | 35°C ±2°C | 5% ±1% by mass | 6.5–7.2 at 35°C ±2°C | 1.0–2.0 mL/h, averaged over at least 16 h |
| ISO 7253 | 35°C ±2°C | Prepared at 50 g/L ±5 g/L; collected at 50 g/L ±10 g/L | 6.5–7.2 | 1.0–2.5 mL/h, averaged over at least 24 h |
The required standard revision and any governing product specification should be confirmed before the chamber is quoted or a test is programmed.
How the Neutral Salt Spray Profiles Differ
The exposure remains continuous neutral fog in every profile. The differences govern how the chamber is operated, checked, and documented.
ISO 9227 NSS
Uses a minimum 24-hour collection average and verifies cabinet corrosivity with specified steel reference specimens and mass-loss limits.
JIS Z 2371 NSS
Closely follows the ISO NSS atmosphere and includes its own provisions for apparatus verification, specimen arrangement, operation, and reporting.
IEC 60068-2-11 Test Ka
Applies the neutral mist to electrotechnical specimens in the operating position required by the relevant specification and provides a defined series of exposure durations and recovery steps.
ISO 7253
Focuses on coated test panels, requires duplicate determinations unless otherwise agreed, and permits a broader collected-solution concentration and fog-collection range.
No wet/dry cycle is hidden in these profiles: Each method calls for continuous salt fog during the prescribed exposure. Brief openings allowed for inspection or chamber service do not create a programmed dry period.
C Series Neutral Salt Fog Generation
Clean compressed air is humidified in the heated bubble tower before reaching the venturi atomizer. The resulting aerosol passes through the tall baffled dispersion tower and enters the exposure zone as a finely divided fog. The tower and baffle help prevent direct spray impingement and distribute freely settling fog through the specimen area.

Neutral Salt Spray Hardware
- Molded fiberglass chamber and cover
- Venturi atomizer for continuous salt-fog generation
- Heated bubble tower for conditioned atomizing air
- Tall baffled dispersion tower
- Fog collectors for monitoring fallout rate
- Integrated 60-gallon solution reservoir

Neutral Salt Spray Chamber FAQ
Which neutral salt spray standards can this chamber perform?
The C Series Size 20 can be configured for ISO 9227 NSS, JIS Z 2371 NSS, IEC 60068-2-11 Test Ka, and ISO 7253. The laboratory must operate and document the chamber according to the exact standard and revision being reported.
Does neutral salt spray include wet and dry cycling?
No. These methods use continuous neutral salt fog for the prescribed exposure period. A test requiring programmed fog, dry, humidity, immersion, or temperature transitions is a different corrosion exposure and should be specified separately.
Does the salt spray standard determine the test duration?
Usually, the governing product, material, coating, customer, or qualification specification establishes the exposure duration and acceptance criteria. IEC 60068-2-11 provides a defined selection of durations, while the other methods generally refer duration to the applicable specification or agreement.
Can this neutral salt spray configuration also run AASS or CASS?
AASS and CASS are not neutral salt spray profiles. They use acidified solutions, and CASS also adds copper chloride and operates at 50°C. Those requirements should be identified before quotation so the appropriate chamber configuration, materials, controls, and operating procedures are supplied.
How is fog delivery checked?
Collectors in the exposure zone measure the quantity of freely settling fog. The laboratory also checks collected-solution concentration and pH according to the selected standard. ISO 9227 and JIS Z 2371 additionally use reference specimens to verify chamber corrosivity.
What is the capacity of the C Series Size 20?
The Size 20 provides approximately 20 ft³ or 594 L of usable test volume. Its base chamber footprint is approximately 95 × 43 inches, excluding final exhaust routing and required service clearance.
What information is needed to quote the chamber?
Provide the required standard and revision, governing product specification, specimen material and dimensions, loading quantity, required orientation, exposure duration, evaluation requirements, and available electrical, compressed-air, water, drainage, and ventilation connections.
